Product Description
This rare south seas battle axe was made from a trade axe head with a handle fashioned by native islanders of the Vanuatu group on Efate Island. The handle is finely crafted of hard island wood with a long shaft terminating at the end with a large open cage knob. The steel axe head was a trade import and dates prior to 1850. 36 1/4 inches long. Excellent condition with expected wear.
The Vanuatu island group is part of Melanesia and is located in the southern part of the Solomon Islands. Captain Cook explored these islands which he named New Hebrides. Efate, one of these islands, is of moderate size and it’s people developed a high level of carving. Unique to the clubs of Efate is the end which was often hollowed out so that delicate lateral stays are formed to unite the upper and lower end, which is seen in this example.
