2613 Vintage Nantucket Purse by the Wooden Jug

This swing handled oval Nantucket basket purse is signed "The Wooden Jug  B & H  Made on Nantucket Island  1967". It measures 8 1/4 in. x 6 in. and features an inset wooden plaque on top with a carved ivory finback whale, ivory handle knobs and ivory bodkin closure.   Superb condition with a beautiful mellow patina.  Original owner's name is inscribed on the bottom and a 1967 penny is inserted in the inside on the bottom. 

Beatrice Booth and Helen Vanatta (B & H) were of the first generation of Nantucket purse makers on the island.  Their shop was on Cliff Road.
