2620 H.S. Hobson; The Famous Cruise of the Kearsarge

This scarce book is bound in red, white and blue with gold lettering. It is the First Edition, copyright 1893 by the author H.S. Hobson and printed by Loring and Axtell in Springfield, Mass. 161 pages plus an appendix. Part I (96 pages) is a description of the cruise and battle written in verse. Part II ( (60 pages) tells the same story in narrative form. There are 7 illustrations including photographs and a drawing of the ship, as well as crew lists of both the Kearsarge and the Alabama. Excellent condition with a very small water spot on the front cover.

The USS KEARSARGE was built in Portsmouth NH in 1861 as a steam sloop of war. She became famous when she defeated the Confederate steam sloop of war ALABAMA off the coast of France in 1864 in the last old fashioned ship-to ship-duel. She was wrecked in 1894.
