Product Description
This plaque with pharmaceutical emblems was carved into an old English bread board by Nantucket carver, James Walter Folger. It is incised in the back, “HANDCARVED BY JAS. W. FOLGER JAN. 7th 1918 AT BOWDOIN ST. DORCHESTER, MASS.” Folger worked in the Boston area for a time, and this piece was undoubtedly a commission for John Dorsey who is listed as a druggist in Dorchester in the 1918 Boston Directory.
In 1902 a retailers' cooperative based in Boston, sold products under the name Rexall. After World War I, a franchise arrangement allowed independently owned retail outlets to use the name and sell the products. These stores frequently sold groceries, such as bread. Dorsey presumably owned one of these stores.
