This is a Bill of Sale for a 1/32nd share in the whaling bark Matilda Sears of New Bedford, being sold for the estate of Wm. Kelley to Charles W. Potter for the sum of $250. It was a common practice in the whaling industry for a number of individuals to diversify their interests by owning small shares in any number of vessels, thus spreading their risks. All the owners of shares in the are listed in this document as are the specifications for the vessel.
The Matilda Sears was built at Dartmouth, Mass. in 1856 and sailed a number of voyages until 1882.
