14422 Nantucket Sailor Boy Whirligig by William H. Chase
Product Description
This Nantucket sailor boy whirligig with wooden body and tin hat is in excellent condition with original paint. 12 1/2 in. tall. Attriibuted to William H. Chase, ca. late 19th to early 20th C. On a new base with replaced paddles.
Chase was a boatbuilder and was known locally as "the whittler”. Some of his carvings were exhibited in the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, and are in the collection of the Smithsonian. He created the famous bowlegged “Happy Jack” sailor boy whirligig in the late 19th C. and this design became the prototype for similar carvings by Lincoln Ceeley and others in the 20th C. A similar sailor boy is in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association, accession number 1979.0041.001
