This is a nice-looking example of a basic American obtuse-headed toggle-type whaling iron. It has been mounted in authentic fashion, replicating the manner in which these irons were used in the whale hunt. There are no marks and the head is presently frozen in the darting position. Length of iron 31 1/4 in., overall 93 1/4 in. Ca. mid 19th C.
