14296 Antique Whaling Tryworks Bailer

Product Description

Exceedingly rare whale oil tryworks bailer. Sheet metal "pail" with wrought iron attachment ring and 9/16 in. diameter iron shaft with socket and support tang. OA length 41 1/4 in.; length of shaft and socket, 33 in. The pail is 9-3/8 in. in diameter at the open end, 7 1/2in. in diameter at the bottom and is 8 in. deep. The condition is as one would expect from heavy use on a whaleship. The pail has several dings and some rust, but is very solid, with only a 1 inch long rusted through slit at one side at the bottom. Minor losses to the sheet metal are visible only on close inspection, near the circular wire supports at the top and bottom. The original wooden pole undoubtedly fell off as all three rivets, or mounting pins, are still intact and captive with peened ends.

This is a very scarce 19th century whale ship implement, which we have seen available on the market only a few times in the last 40 years.
