Product Description
This is a pair of antique brass binoculars, made by J H Steward of London, optical, surveying and mathematical instrument makers. They are well marked. James Henry Steward was the head optician in this company which was established in 1856 and had businesses at Strand and Cornhill. In the mid 1800’s Steward became the optician to Her Majesty’s Government. “The Duke” is undoubtedly the name of the model of these binoculars which date to the late 19th century.
Very nice condition, retaining original lacquer on the brass and very well preserved original leather covering on the shafts. There is just a minor dent in the rim of one of the eyepieces. Measurements are 4 3/4 in. wide, 5 1/2 in. tall (closed) and 7 1/2 in. with eyepieces and sunshades extended.
